AfriTech Fellowship FAQ

Do you have questions about the AfriTech Fellowship program? Take a look at our FAQ below.

About the Program

We are looking for womxn who are either in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) field and/or womxn who are eager to gain an understanding of emerging trends in technology tools, develop inclusive leadership skills, and take a prominent role in addressing environmental, social, and climate justice issues in their community.

Once selected, Fellows receive transformational support. The program supports fellows with the individual capacity-building required to become impactful leaders in their community. We equip fellows with technology tools, inclusive leadership practices, and mentorship from local and international experts to become impactful STEAM leaders.

The primary obligations of your Fellowship last approximately six months, from the beginning of April 2026 to the end of September 2026, with two onboarding calls scheduled for March 2026. There will be a graduation ceremony at the end of September or the beginning of October 2026. The technical training will take place during the first two months of the fellowship.

During these 6 months, each fellow will be expected to: (Dates TBD)

  • Attend the four-day in-person technical training in April 2026 (Those 4 days will be held over four consecutive days between 9 am and 4 pm)
  •  Attend in-person sessions once per month. (Those sessions will be on Saturday and scheduled between 8:30 am – 3:00 pm)
  • Attend online sessions three to four times per month. (Those sessions will be on Thursday and scheduled between 7 pm – 9 pm.)
  • Dedicate approximately 5 hours per week to work on assignments, the team capstone project, develop technical skills, and connect with mentors.
  • Each month, there will also be a personal work week. The personal work week is generally scheduled for the last week of the month. No sessions (online or in-person) will be scheduled that week, allowing fellows more time for assignments, capstone projects, skill development, and mentor connections.

All applicants must be at least 18 years old by the time they apply.

Yes. The program content is delivered in English, and proficiency in English is a requirement. However, we do not require applicants to be native English speakers. Fellows will be encouraged to communicate with each other in the language they feel most comfortable with. (English, French, or Mauritian Kreol)

We will cover food costs for in-person gatherings and all technical training expenses. Fellows are responsible for their own transportation to and from in-person sessions, with the exception of computer lab training, for which transportation will be provided from a central, pre-communicated location.

We review every application carefully, so the process takes some time to complete. You can expect to receive a response from us within two to three weeks after the application closing date, which will be between February and March 2026.

If you are shortlisted, a team member will notify you via the email address provided in your application. Please check your email regularly between February and March 2026 and respond promptly. Once selected, you will be invited to a Zoom interview. After the final interview selection, you will be contacted via email to confirm your position as an AfriTech Fellow for cohort 3.

To apply for the Fellowship, interested individuals should submit an application. Our team will then evaluate your skills and potential contributions. If your application is not successful, we encourage you to reapply for future cohorts.

Preferred Candidates include the following:

  • Womxn interested in or currently pursuing a career in the STEAM Field.
  • Womxn currently working on community project(s) in the social, environmental, or climate justice field.
  • Womxn currently enrolled or accepted into a STEAM degree at a local or international University in Mauritius.

Note: Applicants who do not fall within the above criteria will still be considered if they can demonstrate strong leadership and community-centered values.

  • Commitment to the Fellowship

Active participation is a cornerstone of the AfriTech Fellowship. All Fellows are expected to complete assignments and fulfill commitments. A contractual agreement outlining deliverables and community values will be provided at the start of the fellowship.

  • Attendance Requirement

A minimum attendance rate of 90% is required for successful completion of the program. Detailed information will be shared during the onboarding process.

  • Consequences of Non-Compliance

Failure to meet these expectations, including the attendance requirement, may lead to removal from the Fellowship. This policy ensures fairness and accountability for all participants in the cohort.

Upon successful completion of all deliverables and commitments, Fellows will be awarded a certificate of completion from the AfriTech Fellowship, acknowledging their dedicated participation and achievements.

As an AfriTech Fellow, you are a lifelong member of our community. AfriTech Alumni gain continued access to activities, networking, and events hosted by the Fellowship and its partners. You’ll also remain connected with alumni from earlier cohorts through our community initiatives.

Absolutely. As an association, we continuously welcome volunteers who share our mission of empowering Womxn as key contributors to STEAM fields and digital transformation. We also invite alumni to serve as speakers, mentors, or facilitators for upcoming cohorts—an excellent way to give back, share experiences, and continue growing within the AfriTech network.

Non-discrimination Policy

We are committed to the principle of equal opportunity. We do not discriminate against individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin in the administration of its fellowship opportunities.

Why did we choose to write womxn with an ‘x’?

No, it is not a typo. The term “womxn” is an intersectional term that includes Black womxn, womxn of color, and trans womxn, who have historically been marginalized in white feminist discourse. More recently, its usage has expanded to encompass nonbinary individuals.
