AfriTech Fellowship FAQ
Do you have questions about the AfriTech Fellowship program? Take a look at our FAQ below.
-
What are we looking for in a fellow?
We are looking for womxn in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) field who are eager to gain an understanding of emerging trends in technology tools, develop inclusive leadership skills and take a prominent role in addressing environmental, social, and climate justice issues in their community.
Why should I apply to be a Fellow?
Once selected, Fellows receive transformational support. The program supports Fellows with the individual capacity-building required to become impactful leaders in their community. We equip fellows with technology tools, inclusive leadership practices, and mentorship from local and international experts to become impactful STEAM leaders.
How long does the Fellowship last?
The primary obligations of your Fellowship last for about six months. The technical training will be in the first two months of the fellowship. The rest of the fellowship year will consist of online webinars and mentorship sessions.
During these six months, each fellow will be expected to:
Attend the three-day in-person technical training. (Those three days will be scheduled between 9 am - 4 pm)
Attend in-person sessions once per month. (Those sessions will be on Saturday and scheduled between 9 am - 2 pm )
Attend online sessions 3-4 times per month. (Those sessions will be on Thursday and scheduled between 6 pm - 9 pm )
Dedicate approximately 5 hours weekly to work on Assignments, Capstone project, develop their technical skills, and connect with their mentors.
Each month, there will also be a Personal work week.
The personal work week is generally scheduled for the last week of the month. During that week, no sessions will be scheduled either online or in person. This will therefore allow more time for fellows to work on their Assignments, Capstone projects, develop their technical skills, and connect with their mentors.
However, once a Fellow, you will always be a Fellow. We hope that Fellows stay engaged and thoughtful community members for many years.
-
Do applicants need to be a certain age?
All applicants must be 18 years or older by the time they apply.
Is English proficiency a requirement?
Yes. The program is conducted mainly in English, so English proficiency is a requirement. However, we do not require applicants to be native English speakers. Fellows will be encouraged to communicate with each other in the language they feel the most comfortable with.
Do I have to cover any costs if I become a Fellow?
We will cover the costs of food during any in-person gatherings and all costs associated with the technical training. However, we expect Fellows to plan their transportation to and from the venue of the in-person session, which will be communicated in advance.
-
What is the selection timeline?
We read every application, and therefore the review process takes time. You can expect to hear back from us within a month of the closing date of the application.
What happens if I am selected?
If you are shortlisted, you will be notified by one of our team members by the email address you would have previously provided in the application survey. Please check your email regularly and revert to us as soon as possible.
I don’t think I have the slightest chance. Should I still apply?
If you are interested in being a fellow, please apply to allow our team to assess your skills and learn more about what you could bring to this Fellowship as an individual.
Preferred Candidates include the following:
Womxn interested or currently pursuing a career in STEAM Field.
Womxn currently working on a community project(s) in the social, environmental, or climate justice field.
Womxn currently enrolled or accepted into a STEAM degree at a local or international University in Mauritius.
Note: Applicants that do not fall within the above criteria will still be considered if they can demonstrate strong leadership and community-centered values.

The application form won’t show up when I click the flyer. What do I do?
Try using a different browser. We prefer Chrome, but you should be able to access the application on Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer.
I tried all four of those browsers, and it still isn’t working. Now what?
If refreshing the page does not work, it could be an issue with our website. If it is still not working within an hour, please contact us at afritech.mru@gmail.com for help.
I have filled out all the required questions on the application form, but the form still won’t let me submit the application. What do I do?
Please be sure you are following the character limit guidelines. As a reminder, these are character limits (spaces count as characters), not word limits.
I submitted my application too soon, and I forgot to add one thing. Can I still add it?
All submitted applications are final. Please carefully review your application before submitting it.
I have a disability and need an alternate application form. What can I do?
Please contact us at afritech.mru@gmail.com; we will do our best to accommodate.
Note: We recommend that you write down your answers in a separate document that can be saved before submitting your application in case of technical trouble.

Why did we choose to write womxn with an ‘x’?
No, it is not a typo. Womxn is an intersectional term intended to signal the inclusion of those who have traditionally been excluded from white feminist discourse: Black womxn, womxn of color, and trans womxn. More recently, the term has also been used to include nonbinary people.

"Personally, this fellowship is a safe space for me where everybody, our leader, fellows, and my mentor, always give me their support and encourage me to reach my goals. I will always be thankful for the AfriTech Fellowship. Being in the area of Agriculture (Animal Production student), I have learned new fields such as Project Management, Leadership, Spacial Technology, and Wellness, which I know will help me build my career."
